New airstrike killed At least 10 al-shabab militants in Somalia, US military said

US military command in Africa known as AFRICOM said in a statement released on Jan 3rd, that 10 al-shabab militants were killed in collaboration with the Somalia Federal Government. The statement is shown below.

Kenya ordered closure of Dadaab refugee camp this year, according to leaked UN document

Kenya has ordered the closure of the Dadaab refugee camp by the middle of this year with the race now on to find homes for more than 210,000 people, according to a leaked internal United Nations document obtained by the Thomson Reuters Foundation.  Citing "national security concerns", the Kenyan government wrote to the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) on Feb. 12 about plans to close Dadaab within six months and asking the agency "to expedite relocation of the refugees and asylum-seekers residing therein". Officials from Kenya's interior ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but the UNHCR confirmed the plan. "UNHCR is aware of the renewed call by the Government of Kenya to close Dadaab and is working with the government to continue to implement long-term and sustainable solutions for over 210,000 refugees living in the camp," said the UNHCR in a statement emailed to the Thomson Reuters Foundation. Anger as Somali rapist and murderer pays 75 camels to escape death

Garowe, Somalia, Feb 27 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - The release of a Somali man on death row for the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl after he paid 75 camels undermines a landmark law to curb gender violence and promotes a culture of impunity in the east African nation, women's rights groups said. Aisha Ilyes Aden was abducted from a market in northern Puntland's Galkayo town in February last year. She had been gang-raped and strangled to death and her genitals mutilated. Three men were  sentenced to death in May under a 2016 sexual offences law in the semi-autonomous Puntland region, the first in Somalia to criminalize offences such as sexual harassment and rape. Two of the three men were executed by firing squad earlier this month.  The execution of the third man, named as Abdisalan Abdirahman, was delayed at the time without any official explanation.
